FREERIDING

MÖLLTALER GLETSCHER

VARIANT EBENECK-SCHARTE-BÖCKSTEIN VIA KNALLKAR

Difficulty: easy-medium

Exposure: North

Metres in altitude descent: 1100 metres

Route: 7.1 kilometres

Character: The freeride route from the Ebeneckscharte is the easiest of the many routes into the Anlauftal valley. With only 80 metres of ascent and a descent of over 1000 metres in altitude, it's the perfect route for every deep-snow enthusiast. Due to the north-facing exposure and the congestion on the main ridge of the Alps, there are many ski days on which this variant can be found well. You should not be alarmed at the distance indicated above: This is the result of the forest path that leads to the Böckstein station.

Description: Take the Ankogelbahn 2 to the highest point of the ski area. At the exit of the mountain station, turn left and ascend 10 metres in altitude. Strap on your skis/snowboard and traverse westwards high below the rock faces. Above the T-bar lift, take off your skis and climb up to the striking Ebeneckscharte. At the top, put your skis back on. Enter the Knallkar via a ramp slightly to the left. Descend the wide slope according to your choice of track, always keeping slightly to the left. At an altitude of about 2200 metres, the path becomes somewhat narrower and steeper. Now descend via this kind of gully until it widens again near the stream. Here turn right to the stream and cross it at the most suitable place. From the stream you climb up again a few metres in altitude until you reach a forest path. Along this approx. 5-kilometre-long path (except for a few places always slightly downhill) you reach an ÖBB settlement, near which the Böckstein railway station is already located.

Connection: By train (hourly) back to Mallnitz and by bus/taxi back to the Ankogel ski area. Alternative 2: By taxi to the Mölltal Glacier and from there via one of the variant runs to Sportgastein and by train back to Mallnitz. Alternative 2: By taxi from Böckstein station to Sportgastein, Bad Gastein or Schlossalm.

VARIANT VORDERE LUGGE

Difficulty: easy

Exposure: south

Metres in altitude descent: 1000 metres

Route: 3.6 kilometres

Character: This south-facing freeride route in the middle of the Ankogel ski area invites you to leisurely cruise in wide, open skiing terrain. While the Hintere Lugge is usually quickly tracked after snowfall, this idyll often remains untouched. In contrast to the north-facing tours, which involve a little extra effort, here you return directly to the valley station and thus gain more metres in altitude.

Description: Take the Ankogelbahn 2 to the highest point of the ski area. At the exit of the mountain station, turn left and ascend 10 metres in altitude. Strap on your skis/snowboard and traverse westwards high below the rock faces. Pass above the T-bar lift to the prominent Luggetörl, which you reach with a short ascent. From here a short, somewhat steeper climb into the Vordere Lugge. The wide ski terrain can be skied in several variations, becoming steeper and more rocky towards the right. Shortly before the forest begins, turn left towards the middle station until you finally reach the piste again. Descend via the piste to the valley station.

Connection: Back to the ski area.
