MÖLLTALER GLETSCHER
VARIANT BAUMBACHSPITZE-SPORTGASTEIN VIA SCHLAPPEREBENKEES

The ski variant described here is, sort of speak, "the classic" among the many possibilities to ride wide freeride skis from the Mölltal Glacier ski resort to Sportgastein. The wide ski area and the unique panorama of the Hohen Tauern make the day in the powder snow an awsome experience. Once arrived in Sportgastein, you can either continue there or change to the Ankogel by bus and train, where there is also an extensive freeride area.
Description:
In the ski resort Mölltaler Gletscher take the Gletscher Jet to the highest point. Now you either climb to the southeastern Baumbachspitze (3105m) or drive over the Ziehweg to the still southeastern located Scharte (about 300m). Now over the southeastern slopes to the Schlapperebenkees. Short, slightly flatter, it flows into a somewhat steeper bottleneck, which is driven left hand. In northeastern direction you can continue to the Schlapperebenkar. Here you keep to the right under the rock ledge and get into the large gutter. The entry bit is steeper for a while, but flattens off quickly. At the end of the gutter you drive always left holding a path to the valley station Sportgastein.
Connection:
In Sportgastein either skiing or by taxi / bus and train to Mallnitz. Continue there in the Ankogel ski area (accessible by taxi / bus) or by taxi back to the Mölltal Glacier.
VARIANT SCHARECK-SPORTGASTEIN

- Distance: about 4.4 kilometers

This ski variant is a real treat. First, you literally rush down an 800-meter-long and equally steep slope. Then you should shorten the radius, to get through one of the two channels to Sportgastein. Due to its steepness and alpine character, this route is reserved for experienced skiers and should only be used on safe days!
Description:
In the ski resort Mölltaler Glacier take the Gletscher Jet to the highest point. After getting off at the mountain station turn right immediately and behind the lift house into the gap between Schareck and Baumbachspitze (ascent time: approx. 15 seconds :-)). Keeping to the left, after a few meters, you reach the long northeast slope. This down to the Schlapperebenkar. Now ride either through the small gutter (approx. in the middle of the slope) or the large one down. At the end of both you shall see the way via the Ziehweg to the valley station in Sportgastein.
Connection:
In Sportgastein either skiing or by taxi / bus and train to Mallnitz. Continue there in the Ankogel ski area (accessible by taxi / bus) or by taxi back to the Mölltal Glacier.
